Listen

By Pastor John on 1/9/2010

One thing that God has been telling me over and over again is to listen to His voice.

We spend a lot of time worrying about the wrong things.  As I think back over 2009, I've forgotten many of the details.  I could probably recall an event or two out of each month but I'd have to really put my mind to it to try and remember the details.  So many minor frustrations that came and went.  How would our lives be different if we really listened to God's voice?

Call it a New Year's resolution if you will.  But if a New Year's resolution is something soon forgotten and not kept up with, then call it something else.  I'm going to listen to God's voice more often.  I've decided that I'm only going to worry when God tells me to worry.  I'm only going to work as hard as God tells me to work.  I'm going to talk to Him about pretty much everything and I'm going to seek His wisdom.

What would that kind of life look like?  I'd hardly ever worry because God doesn't tell me to worry very often.  I wouldn't need to work as hard and I'd make brilliant decisions all the time as I'd be basing my choices on His wisdom.

So far, this week past week has done everything in it's power to test me... and I did pretty well.  Our truck broke down while Jen was driving it to work and it was a VERY expensive repair.  I asked God if He wanted me to worry and He said "No," so I didn't.  Then He even offered to pay for it.  And He did!

Later that night, Jen and I were both feeling very sick, it was a blizzard, and we had almost no food left in the house (we hadn't found time to go shopping).  I didn't feel like getting out of bed let alone making dinner.  With all the food we had left, I managed to burn two grilled cheese sandwiches and boil nearly a whole can of soup out of the pot and onto the stove.  When I asked God if He could deliver some groceries, He did!  And on and on it went all week.

God is always speaking to us.  We're just not always listening.  Before reacting, try talking to God.  He always has things figured out!
